We can start the history of DVSC women’s handball team on 1 May 1948. For the call of Ferenc Bokor, who was the financial controller of the Hungarian Railways (MÁV) HQs, girls from Debrecen who loved handball gathered for the first time. They were mainly daughters of railway workers. The first match of the freshly picked team was not so bright since the Békéscsaba Lokomotiv (a sister team of Debrecen) defeated the new team 13-1. But later on they showed their lion’s nails while they changed the name to Lokomotív (that is where the name Loki which s still being used today comes from). Then the team played under the name Törekvés again and in 1955 it won the national championship on small field. A few years after the gold medal – again under the name DVSC – the team got relegated from the first division. Then it took a bit more than two decades for the team to get promoted again to the top division. It is a cruel luck of fate that the name of the team was not DVSC either but it got promoted under the name DMVSC. Since then it has stayed in the top flight of the Hungarian championship.
In the beginning the team secured its place among the best teams and then from 1981, under coach Ákos Komáromi, the brightest era of the team started. By the mid-80s it was the most popular and most successful team of the city and the region. When winning the title in 1987 Loki had already featured in its first European cup final, the team lost in the 1985/85 IHF Cup final against the East German team of SC Leipzig. The fans of the team really enjoyed these international cup matches moreover in the late-80s and early-90s a further three Hungarian Cup trophies landed in the cabinet of the club. In the 1989/90 season there was no real chance in the Cup Winners Cup final against Rostelmas Rostov while in the same Cup Radnicki Beograd won the final and the gold medal ahead of Debrecen on the away goals rule. Two years later the curse of away goals haunted Loki again when they lost the same way against Viborg in the EHF Cup final. We had to wait for compensation for a year when in the ’95 EHF Cup Final the opponent was Bakkelagets Oslo and finally the tide turned and the cursed away goals favoured Loki this time. We won the first European Cup after which thousands of fans awaited the girls at the airport. In the next year Loki did what no other team had done before in the EHF Cup, they retained the title against the Norwegian team, Larvik and again thanks to the away goals rule.
After the political changes in Hungary, similarly to other big clubs in Hungary who had several sport club sections, DVSC also suffered. The club ceased to exist but the DVSC handball team stayed alive. The needs of the fans were obvious and the city also stood up to DVSC Handball Ltd., Loki stood its ground through the hard times and even played a Hungarian Cup Final in 2001. DVSC stayed among the best in the next decade as well, played twice in the championship final and played in the group phase of the Champions League.
In the last couple of years DVSC-TVP has grown to become one of the most important teams of the region. Since the city of Debrecen stood behind the team “as one” and leaving behind a period of hard times results show that the work of the previous years paid off. The development is obvious after finishing 11 th , 9 th and 7 th this year the team finished in 4 th place in the 2015/16 season and won the right to participate in the international cup in the season 2016/17. After having been absent for seven years DVSC made it to the FinalFour in the Hungarian Cup last season where they won bronze medal. Fans also made it clear that they stand by the team. Thanks to the improving results and the unique promotions the last years DVSC has sold the second most season tickets in Hungary. As a result the number of spectators has risen further, the home venue had a 82% capacity run which means a close to 1500 average number of spectators per game which meant that DVSC was the second most popular Hungarian women handball team behind Győri Audi ETO. We played against Győri Audi ETO in the league in the Főnix Hall which broke every Hungarian championship record by an incredible number of 5500 fans watching the match live in the hall.
By raising our budget, securing a stable financial background, receiving help from our sponsors our not so secret aim is to participate in the European cups continuously thus spreading the word of our city and in the meantime offering excellent marketing opportunities to our team’s sponsors. Thanks to the team’s successes and the close relationship with the media there is a huge media interest towards the daily life of the team, several electronic and printed articles, radio and tv reports on the activities of the club. Thanks to the mutual agreement between the Hungarian Handball Federation, our club and DIGI Ltd. handball receives a priority on the DIGI sports channels from the 2017/18 season, all our away matches will be broadcast live on the internet and all of our home games in the international cups will be broadcast live on DigiSport.
To achieve our new goals we would like to win those sponsors who can use the marketing role of sport, handball and a club with serious traditions to promote their companies, products, events and services. Our team, where there is conscious professional work, plays in one of the strongest championships of the world and has one of the biggest fan base, would be suitable for this.
The Hungarian league, Hungarian cup and international cup matches or other events organized by us provide excellent possibilities for our sponsors and partners to show themselves. At the venue of our matches, the Imre Hódos Sports Hall we can serve our sponsors with advert and promotional possibilities of the 21 st century. The giant LED score board, the 80 metre long LED advert wall running along the court and behind the goals, the court advert, the kit advert or the sponsor wall used during media appearances all serve the interest of our sponsors that their adverts directly reach thousands of spectators. But also the tickets, the season tickets, wristbands, team publications or the posters found on the local public transport reach thousands of fans in a season.
There is also a possibility for personal sponsorship where the sponsorship is directly with a player or coach – based on a unique agreement.
