Zoltán Szilágyi became Vladimir Golovin’s assistant at the national team

At the request of Vladimir Golovin, Zoltán Szilágyi became the assistant captain of the Hungarian women’s handball team. In addition to his duties as head coach of DVSC SCHAEFFLER, the specialist performs the task for the national team.

According to the announcement of the MKSZ, the contract of Vladimir Golovin, who finished in 6th place with the women’s national team at the Paris Olympics, expiring on December 31, 2024, was extended by the Board of the Hungarian Handball Association after discussions with the professional manager, so the captain’s new contract is until the end of the Los Angeles Olympics, i.e. It runs until August 31, 2028. The captain’s assistant will be Zoltán Szilágyi, while the previous second coach, Krisztina Pigniczki, will continue to work as the head coach of the women’s youth national team. The head coach of DVSC SCHAEFFLER already participated in the training of the national team on Monday.
“It’s a huge honor to work with the national team, so I didn’t even think about the answer for a moment after Vladimir Golovin asked me,” Zoltán Szilágyi told our website. – The opportunity came up after the Olympics and the fact that the team performed so well at the five-ring games only strengthened my decision even more. I think the national team is clearly on the way up, it is a company destined for many things, which has a bright future ahead of it. I am glad that I can be a part of it. I think I can say that Vova and I have been good friends for a long time. We have known each other for a very long time, when I was a coach at Dabas, he was my player.
We think very similarly about handball and have talked a lot about professional issues. The captain’s concept for the next Olympic cycle is extremely attractive, and I want to help him make it happen. Based on the negotiations so far, I would say that he doesn’t count on me in the classic role of second coach, but expects a little more from me, our relationship will be more direct, but what exactly this means will develop as we go along. I see a lot of potential in the team, and I hope that we can already deliver a good performance at the domestic European Championships in Debrecen. I also thank the Hungarian Handball Association for their trust, as well as the positive attitude of the management of my club, DVSC SCHAEFFLER, as they are very flexible in their approach to my dual task.”

Zoltán Szilágyi has now started his fourth season at DVSC SCHAEFFLER. Since his arrival, the team has been constantly developing both in terms of play and efficiency. He won two championship and two Hungarian Cup bronze medals with Loki, last year he reached the top twelve in the Champions League with the team. So far, he has sat on the bench for DVSC SCHAEFFLER in 115 matches. His record is 79 wins, 7 draws and 29 losses, which is a 72 percent performance. If we only look at league matches, he has the best coaching record in the history of the club, as he has won 62 of his 81 league matches so far, with 3 draws and 16 defeats, which is a 78 percent indicator.

The invitation of Zoltán Szilágyi to be the second coach of the national team clearly confirms the professional work that is going on in Debrecen. The changes in the professional staff of the adult national team also affect the coaching positions of the younger age groups.

By definition, Zoltán Szilágyi will not continue working for the junior national team as a national coach.
