What a game, what a victory!!!

Esztergom had already led by five, but in the end we could be happy. At the cost of a huge struggle, he won at the last moment in the home of the newcomer.

The 600-seat Suzuki Aréna was filled to overflowing for the derby, nearly a hundred fans from Debrecen were also in the stands, so we managed to compensate a little for the advantage of the home field. There were no complaints about the atmosphere. The domestic B-center and the Debrecen supporters also showed their strength.

DVSC SCHAEFFLER started the match, but the first attack failed to score, so the home team took the lead with Faragó’s goal. Töpfner equalized from the next attack. The two teams went head-to-head in the first five, but Esztergom was able to increase the difference in the next minute with goals from Faragó and Szucsánszki, who shot effectively from a distance. In the tenth minute, at minus three, Zoltán Szilágyi asked for time. However, the difference continued to grow, after a quarter of an hour the home team was already ahead by four. Our players were imprecise in attack and could not react to the game of Esztergom in this period. At two-thirds of the half, the difference was still four, with Jessica Ryde defending nearly 50 percent of the time. The team started to find itself in the last ten minutes of the game, they managed to catch up to two goals. That’s when the ugliest scene of the match happened, Töpfner running in from the wing was elbowed by Hajtai. The winger from Debrecen lost consciousness, but after a few minutes he left the pitch on his own feet. Hajtai got away with the seemingly deliberate move with a two-minute exhibition. Esztergom led by three at the break.

The home team scored the first goal in the second half as well, thus restoring the largest four-goal difference so far, and even at the beginning of the 34th minute, Esztergom was already ahead by five, so Zoltán Szilágyi asked for a second time. This time, the game interruption brought a positive change. DVSC SCHAEFFLER caught up to a goal in just five minutes. However, we were not able to equalize, the reason being, among other things, that Lili Herczeg was at least as well defended on the home side as Ryde was for us. Specifically, they stood at 41 and 43 percent in the middle of the second half. Meanwhile, Esztergom trailed again with four goals. There was a quarter of an hour left to translate somehow. The girls fought, there was no complaint for a moment. There were nine and a half minutes left, when we got up to a goal again. Then Gábor Elek asked for his third term. Nevertheless, they managed to equalize at the beginning of the 23rd minute. The score was not tied since the starting whistle… We had several opportunities to take the lead in the first half, but it simply did not want to succeed. Either Herczeg or the goal post saved. One minute before the end, Esztergom attacked with a score of 21:21, but Ryde defended bravely many times. Even we have time left for an attack. Thorleifsdóttír’s last-minute shot took Lili Herczeg’s hand. From GOOOOO! WE WON!!! We took the lead for the first time in the very last moments of the match, when the opponent no longer had a chance to equalize. This is how it should be done!

COACHES’ SPEECHES:
Gábor Elek: Congratulations to Debrecen. I think the better team won, DVSC SCHAEFFLER has a longer bench and better players, which came out in the match. It wasn’t a pretty game, it was more of a struggle. I can only praise my own players, along with the fact that the victory slipped out of our hands due to our own mistakes. The opponent grinded us down in an attacking game, we were very tired by the end. Debrecen’s success was not due to luck, they simply outgrew us physically, that was the decision.
Zoltán Szilágyi: I would like to congratulate Esztergom, not only for today’s competitive match, but for what they have built here in a year and a half. I think that Esztergom dominated almost the whole time, but it shows the strength of our team that we were always able to come back into the game, even from a five-goal deficit. This required excellent defense in the second half and excellent goalkeeping throughout the game. We were crampy, we didn’t really play well, but we were lucky today.
