The Hungarian national team, with three DVSC SCHAEFFLER players, finished in 10th place at the world championships. What was seen was evaluated by the honorary president of the DVSC Handball Academy, the two-time EHF Cup winning master coach Vilmos Köstner.
“The Olympic qualifying place won does not cover the shortcomings, but it is a great opportunity, it can mean a lot regarding the appreciation of the sport,” said Vilmos Köstner. – The overall picture regarding the performance of the Hungarian national team is mixed. The team won the easy matches confidently, with wide margins, and this is to be commended even if it was a clear expectation. The beauty flaw of these successes was that the members of the starting team spent more time on the field than was justified.
A healthy rotation could have been fortunate in more ways than one. On the one hand, with fewer playing minutes behind them, the regular players could have played more mentally and physically in the key matches, and on the other hand, it would have been good for the self-confidence of those who played less. Thus, perhaps against Montenegro or Sweden in the second half, they could have replaced and relieved the others better. It was already decided after the defeat against the Swedes that they would not make it to the last eight, but in the end game of the last match of the semi-final, the team gave a very commendable performance, so the most important goal was achieved, our national team can be there at the Olympic qualifying tournament. Thus, we had six matches at the World Cup, in order to have more, we should have played better handball against Montenegro in the second half.”
The legendary master of DVSC also evaluated the individual performance of the players.
“The best performance was clearly provided by the team’s number one goalkeeper, Blanka Böde-Bíró – continued Vilmos Köstner. – Among the outfield players, Petra Vámos provided the most consistent production, this is true even if she was perhaps mentally tired for the match against the Croatians, which led to several errors in her game. Vamosz was decisive for the Hungarian team both in defense and attack. He produced above average in gaining an advantage, in one-on-one play, and in exploiting jumps. Maybe it could improve in the one-on-one sequel. If he develops in this as well, he will become an even more complex player. Also worthy of praise is Simon Petra, who got into the matches well, gave the team a new face, and surpassed the regular shooters in passing shots. Katrin Klujber can be credited with the fact that, with a few exceptions, she confidently sold the seven-meters. In the Croatian match, he played a key role in catching up with his excellent second-half defense and ball steals. Kinga Debreczeni-Klivinyi had few roles, but when he was on the field, thanks to his routine, he handled the tasks assigned to him excellently as a manager. The others were behind in their knowledge.
Among our players, Alexandra Töpfner and Petra Füzi-Tóvizi had fewer opportunities than in Debrecen, so they could not provide the balanced performance they did in the autumn in the BL and the championship. Tamara Haggerty and the Dutch national team are still playing at the World Cup, our linebacker’s team brings the level we have been used to in recent years. This is true even if they will be playing for the fifth-eighth place after the quarter-final loss against Norway. A significant part of Tamara’s participation in the WC may be the fact that she plays for us and was able to appear in the BL in the fall. He proved that he is a reliable handball player, he solved the task assigned to him, but he gets significantly less playing time than in the DVSC.
The World Cup of Jovana Jovovics, who spent more time on the field in the Serbian national team, is just the opposite of what she is used to here. This average playing time of more than 55 minutes really strained him, which is probably why he got sick in the match against Japan. It is gratifying that our striker is doing better, and also that he was a decisive player of the Serbian national team at the World Cup, he played well and scored a lot of assists. The World Cup can further improve Jovi’s performance in Debrecen, which we will greatly need.”
