Second time on the bronze road – part 2: Beyond the forced march

After the European Championship in November, a difficult period awaited the team. Even though we scored eight points in the Europa League, we did not advance from the group, scoring away points against Fradi was a feat at its best!

Celebration after a big win against Nykobing FH

Six of our players (Petra Vámos, Réka Bordás, Dóra Hornyák, Petra Füzi-Tóvizi, Gréta Kácsor and Alexandra Töpfner) were in the Hungarian squad at the European Championship jointly organized by Slovenia, North Macedonia and Montenegro in November, so the dressing room of DVSC SCHAEFFLER was practically emptied. While the continental tournament was taking place, it turned out that our Belorussian legionnaire, Karina Jezsikawa, was about to experience the joys of motherhood, so of course the coaching staff in Debrecen could not count on her. Jovana Jovovics, a Serbian-Hungarian dual citizen, came from Budaörs to replace Karina, who Zoltán Szilágyi tried to integrate into the team in a few weeks.

It was clear that after the continuation of the championship, one of the busiest periods in the club’s history awaits the girls, since in addition to the hunt for domestic points, the group stage of the EHF European League began at the beginning of January.

In the last month of 2022, “only” NB I matches awaited Loki. On December 3, at the home of MTK, the team returned to the road of stakes matches, and although we were leading by five goals in the middle of the second half, we finally scored the two points with Petra Vámos’ last-second goal (28-29).

The tour to Siófok followed on December 14, and the match started very badly for us, as Dóra Hornyák was injured in the first minute. Our captain’s cruciate ligament was torn, so we lost him for the whole season. Despite this, we produced a great first half, leading 18-10 at the break. In the continuation, we scored the first goal, the difference between the two teams was already nine units, when we simply lost the lead. We made many mistakes in offense and defense too, we collected stupid exhibitions. The hosts, who had been hesitant until then, began to believe that there was a way back into the match. And when they got close, they got bloodshot, and there was no way back from here. We lost 28-26, lost Dodo Hornyák, and three days later we hosted Vác in Hódos…

In one of the key games of the season, the team worked perfectly until the 40th minute, we were leading 26-18, when a short circuit came again. Haste, mistakes, a growing rival, all of these together meant that the advantage rapidly decreased, of which one goal remained, we won 34-33, and the two points were the most important!

Two days before Christmas, we played at NEKA’s home, and even if it wasn’t a good game, we won 27-23. On the penultimate day of the new year, we hosted Győr in Hódos, and we were very close to the feat. It was not just us that the people of Győr could be happy in the end (30–31). Despite the defeat, the game against ETO was encouraging before the start of the EL group stage…

On January 7, at home, we started the group stage of the Europa League against Nyköbing of Denmark, who later became finalists, and we won 28-27 in an extremely intense match, but Jovana Jovovics injured her elbow, and we lost her for months….

Then came the biggest throw of the season. Four days after the victory against the Danes, we scored a point in the Elek Gyula Arena, the home of Ferencváros. Another four days, and in Kapronca, in front of more than a hundred Loki fans, we scored two points in the EL (20-26), so after two rounds we were in Group C with a 60% performance. In the third round, at the home of Sola, we could have scored a point, but we spoiled the final game, so the Norwegians could be happy (30-25).

A long break in the Europa League followed, so in the last week of January we played two matches in the domestic league, we beat Békéscsaba and then Kisvárda. On the first Saturday of February, we fought back against Sola in Hódos (25-21). We traveled to the away match against Nyköbing with bad omens, as Réka Bordás could not play with the team due to an ankle injury, so we had no chance against the later finalist, we ran into the biggest defeat of the season in Denmark (34-22).

Unfortunately, the home match against Podravka was no longer at stake in the final round, as the Sola-Nyköbing match ended with a result that allowed the two northern teams to enter the quarter-finals hand in hand. Thus, after the 32-31 victory over the Croatians, we were able to conclude that even though we would have liked eight points, we could not continue our participation in the second European Cup series.
