Despite the scary start, DVSC SCHAEFFLER was in the match against Odense until the beginning, and the huge feat was based on nuances.
“The more people hug me, the more I cry,” said an extremely distraught Konszuéla Hámori a few minutes after the Odense-DVSC SCHAEFFLER match. The excellent right-hander of Debrecen cried with reason, as the Norwegian refereeing pair did not award a seven-meter penalty for the foul committed against him when the home team was leading 28-27. If the equalization is achieved then, we could even talk about a miracle now. So we can only say that DVSC SCHAEFFLER has arrived in the Champions League…
The Debrecen team got to know the Sydbank Arena on the morning of the match. Then there was a video analysis, and after lunch, a short rest was included in the program, and the DVSC SCHAEFFLER team started back to the venue of the Champions League group match against Odense Handbold. In addition to Hungary, people from the Netherlands and Sweden also came to support Loki, the relatives of Tamara Haggerty and Elinore Johansson traveled to Denmark to watch the match.
The match that, to put it mildly, the Debrecen team started very badly. Not even six minutes had passed and Odense was leading 6–0, and the nightmare of a serious defeat was looming. Koni Hámori scored our first goal in the eighth minute, and it was also a wake-up call for the team. Our defense rallied, in the next ten minutes we conceded only two goals, and in the meantime we started to catch up. After the horror start, we got closer and closer, and with Alexandra Töpfner’s goal in the 25th minute, the difference was only two (13-11). Even after thirty minutes, the hosts were leading by only three.
Even after the break, Odense could not make progress, and when the scissors opened, there was always someone who added something extra to the team’s performance.
The final was approaching, and the excellently fighting ladies of Debrecen, under the guidance of Gréta Kácsor, who produced extras, were still hanging on their rivals. In fact, in the last ten minutes, DVSC SCHAEFFLER closed in and we scored a goal. That’s when Koni Hámori, who was fouled inside the box, broke through, but the whistle of the Norwegian referees remained silent. (We were wary of the two Norwegian referees in advance, as they already took away a serious success from us once and they didn’t lie to themselves. It’s another matter why the EHF thinks that a Norwegian coach, with Norwegian players, is good for the match of his team idea to send Norwegian referees…)
The missed equalizer disturbed the team, Odense withdrew again. In the beginning, we also tried the seven against six game, but at that point there was no going back, Odense won 33-30. Koni Hámori was not the only one who cried after the match because of the missed opportunity, but there is no reason to be sad. Our CL rookie team showed that it is no stranger to the elite league.

Ole Gjekstad: We knew Debrecen was a good team and they proved it today. We started the match well, but DVSC did not give up, they came very close to us. I’m happy with the win, the two points were the most important thing and we got that, that was the point.
Zoltán Szilágyi: Despite the bad start, I can be satisfied with my team because we played a good match against Odense, who also had a chance to win the group. I can be proud of the girls for today’s performance!
