Junior WCh: Honorary mission completed

Perfect defense, excellent goalkeeping, spirited attacking play, 15-goal win against South Korea. Liliána Csernyanszki became the man of the match! The Hungarian national team will start in the semi-finals on Sunday afternoon at quarter to five.

Player of the match: Csernyánszki Liliána

The Hungarian national team started the World Championship with two easy victories against Argentina and Mexico, but on Saturday, in the group final against South Korea, a much more serious task awaited us.

And for the Hungarian girls, this clash was probably more than just a simple group match. And not only because this time they met their first serious opponent, and because they knew that they would carry this result to the semi-finals. This age group has participated in three world tournaments so far and lost only one match. The venue (Borisz Trajkovskiy Arena) and the opponent (South Korea) were the same in August 2022. So it was a bit of a matter of honor for the Hungarian girls.

Based on the first two group matches, it was already apparent that the rotation options of the Asian team are much more modest than those of the Hungarians. The group match against Argentina, which turned out to be closer than expected, was played almost the entire time by the regular players from the starting line-up. The player who spent the least time on the court also played 56 minutes and 50 seconds. And it was clear that this against the Hungarian national team was not efficient.

Zoltán Szilágyi’s students felt the tension corresponding to the stakes, as the Koreans had the advantage in the first quarter of an hour. Then the regrouping got better and better, and the Asian ladies didn’t have much chance against a standing wall. In the 16th minute, we regained the lead with Liliána Csernyanszki’s goal (7-6), and after Cseri’s assist, Luca Kövér’s goal put us two ahead of our opponent for the first time. We kept our advantage until the beginning of the half, and then, at the moment before the halftime whistle, Csernyanszki’s bomb from the foot created the biggest difference (13-9).

In the second half, Cseri continued where he left off before the break, with his break-in goal we already led by five. Our manager caught the thread very well, he scored four times in six minutes, and since the defense and the goalkeeping performance of Klára Zaj were still extra, and Luca Csíkos also got involved, the difference grew rapidly. With Vác’s passing goal, the difference became ten in the 38th minute (20-10), and from there there was no way back for the tiring Koreans against one of the strongest teams in the field. It didn’t happen, the end was a 15-goal Hungarian victory, and the excellent Liliána Csernyanszki was chosen as the best of the match.

And what has changed since the defeat in the 2022 World Youth Championship semi-finals. Well, the Hungarian players improved a lot both physically and in their playing skills, and for the Koreans, it was as if time had stopped. This is due to the fact that the Hungarian team scored three more goals than two years ago, while South Korea scored as many goals in the space of sixty minutes as it did in the first half…

The Hungarian national team thus advanced to the semi-finals as group leader, with the two points they earned against South Korea, where they will face Denmark and Norway, who advanced from Group D. Our team will play the first match of the semi-final on Sunday at 16.15 against the loser of the Danish-Norwegian match that starts later.
