DVSC players on the WC: Tamara Haggerty’s team still in competition

The Hungarian, Brazilian, and Serbian national teams ended their World Championship appearance in the main round, Tamara Haggerty and the Netherlands can continue in the quarter-finals.

Among our foreign players, Jovana Jovovics, who finished in 21st place and is a member of the Serbian national team, received extreme playing time from their national team captain Uros Bregar: she spent an average of more than 55 (!) minutes on the court in the group matches and the first two meetings of the semifinals. After that, it is not surprising that he was very tired for the final match against the Japanese, and fainted in the 8th minute. Fortunately, Jovi is better, but he still needs a thorough examination. Our left back scored 21 goals out of 34 attempts and handed out 32 assists, placing him in fourth place on the World Cup assist table after the semi-finals and also in the top ten on the “Canadian table”. By the way, Serbia received an extremely difficult draw: Denmark, Romania, Chile, Poland, Germany and Japan were their opponents in that order.

Mariana Costa and the Brazilian national team finished in 9th place. The right winger, who will leave DVSC SCHAEFFLER at the end of 2023, scored 18 goals in the World Championship, played average 32 minutes per game. The Brazilians played against Ukraine, Kazakhstan, Spain, the Netherlands, Argentina and the Czech Republic in that order and missed the quarter-finals by a narrow margin.

The Dutch have performed impressively in the tournament so far, easily winning against Argentina, Congo, Brazil, the Czech Republic, Ukraine and Spain, with eight goals being their narrowest success. Our pivot mainly played a defensive role. In attack, she scored twice by two shots. The Netherlands will meet the defending champion and last year’s European Championship winner Norway in the quarter-finals.
