With the award, the city recognizes business organizations and communities that carry out work of outstanding value and keep sustainability in mind in order to develop an environmentally conscious approach.
The Sustainable Debrecen award was presented on Friday afternoon by Mayor László Papp and Ákos Balázs, Deputy Mayor responsible for city operations and environmental protection tasks, to Zsolt Ábrók, managing director of DVSC Kézilabda Kft. The expert evaluation committee of the Future of Debrecen movement highlighted the following efforts in the justification.
“DVSC Handball Kft. competes with the DVSC SCHAEFFLER women’s Nb 1 handball team, operates the DVSC Handball Academy and operates the Imre Hódos Event Hall. Due to their passion for sports, the company’s employees are dedicated supporters of a healthy lifestyle and supporters of actions related to environmental protection. The company’s employees and sportsmen took part in several awareness-raising activities in the spirit of social responsibility. For example, they also participated in the planting of urban protected forests. In addition to managing director Zsolt Ábrók, the players also grabbed spades and shovels and planted saplings at the Vértessy mansion.
In addition, team members regularly participate in community garbage collections and in the promotion of projects with environmental protection themes (e.g. containers for used cooking oil, cap collection campaign).
The indoor bicycle storage facility located at the headquarters of DVSC Kézilabda Kft., in the parking lot of the Hódos Imre Rendezvénycsarnok, creates an opportunity for the company’s employees and the members of the adult and youth teams training in the hall to store their bicycles there. By the way, the employees in the hall are happy to take advantage of this opportunity. It is interesting that Zoltán Szilágyi, the head coach of the DVSC SCHAEFFLER team, regularly comes to training by bicycle.
Flower boxes were placed in the reception area of the Hódos Imre Rendezvénycsarnok, in which live plants were planted, and flowers were also planted in the concrete flower boxes behind the hall with the help of the members of the women’s handball team. In the recently created rear parking lot, they tried to reduce the asphalted part to a minimum, so a grass grid was laid to facilitate water permeation in the parking spaces.
Energy-saving LED bulbs and fluorescent lamps are used in all units of the Event Hall. Motion detector lights were installed in all water units (toilet, sink). The faucets are also equipped with a motion sensor to minimize water consumption. The hall has been renovated in recent years. The windows and doors were replaced with plastic ones, and the walls and ceiling were insulated.
They try to minimize the use of district heating and use alternative solutions for heating. Additional rooms (offices, changing rooms, doctor’s room, gym, etc.) are heated, for example, by a heat pump. A solar panel system was installed on the roof of the hall. The 108 solar panels of 455 watts each can produce a fifth of the facility’s annual electricity consumption.”
