Disaster after the break

The three-goal advantage at halftime turned into a six-goal deficit, the Hungarian national team lost to Montenegro, and found themselves in a very difficult situation!

We knew that after the easy successes against Paraguay and Cameroon, this would be the first tough game of the World Cup, the first sixty minutes to be won to achieve the goals. The Montenegrin national team, which won last year’s European Championship bronze medal, is one of the most unpleasant opponents among the elite, full of rock-hard, uncompromising fighters. Moreover, in their case – and during the matches played against them – the key question is what the referees allow, where do they draw the line between hardness and rudeness. Well, by the way, the meeting was led by a Danish duo brilliantly, their perception was not favorable to us (and we put it delicately at the time). Katrin Klujber received the first dismissal of the match in the 17th minute. But by then, at least three Montenegrins should have been sent out for two minutes. Tatjana Brnovics, for example, literally terrorized Petra Vámos – with impunity. In the goal-poor first half, the Montenegrin national team had the advantage for a long time, and the game flowed in their favor. Fortunately, Blanka Böde-Bíró caught the thread, and in attack, even if it was difficult, we found the gap in the opponent’s wall. We took the lead, and the 18. With the second goal of Petra Vámos in the second minute, we were already two ahead of our rivals, and the advantage increased to three goals by the break.

Then, in the continuation, we had several opportunities to further increase the gap, but instead we missed four shots – or let’s say that Marta Batinovics, naturalized from Croatia, defended brilliantly – we sold three balls, and in the 40th minute, Montenegro already led 14-11. There is no better word, the Hungarian national team fell apart in both defense and attack, and there is no explanation for that. that Batinovics really defended in an inspired form. By the time Petra Vámos broke our team’s more than 12-minute goalless streak, faith was already there, while the representatives of the other side played handball in ecstasy. Montenegro won the second half 17-8… This has put the Hungarian national team in a very difficult situation, it is not worth counting, they will probably have to defeat all three of their opponents in the semi-finals if they want to finish in a place worthy of an Olympic qualifier.
