DVSC SCHAEFFLER played an unbelievable match at home of Vipers Kristiansand. We were ten minutes to the miracle. That is the end of fantastic journey and we said goodybe by head high.
In Kristiansand, everything is about Vipers. Wherever you go, sooner or later you stumble upon a pink flag, a player’s photo, or even the snake logo painted on the wall. The Norwegians announced the round of 16 of the Champions League. They obviously tried to use as many marketing tricks as possible in order to somehow fill the 1,800-person sports hall. Because as incredible as it is, they rarely succeed. As they put it, on free weekends, many people prefer the ski resort two hours away by car. Bring it to you, three-time BL winner.
The leisure complex called Aquarama, known primarily for its spa, has everything to stimulate the eyes and mouth. In addition to the many pools, there is a huge climbing wall, a wellness center, an excellent hotel and, last but not least, a sensational view of the sea. Well, there is the hall that serves as the home of the Vipers, which is used as a school gym on busy weekdays. In short, people are not only envious of the results of the Norwegian star team…
Well, on this gloomy Saturday, the Hungarian bronze medalist DVSC SCHAEFFLER arrived at the Kristiansand complex not to stare open-mouthed at his big-name rival, but to prove that he can take up the fight with the defending champion again after the wonderful home match.
With a quick double, Nina Szabó immediately indicated that Loki must be taken seriously in this match as well. We started energetically and well, leading 2:0 and 3:1 in the first 5 minutes, then we managed to increase the advantage to three goals in the tenth minute. DVSC SCHAEFFLER was very excited, the girls played almost in ecstasy. In the 13th minute, Tomas Hlavaty asked for time. After that, the home team came back with a goal, but the Debrecen team continued to defend very disciplined and from that came more and more miracle goals. Four in the 20th minute! we were driving while Nina Szabó was acting! kept on hitting. And it wasn’t over yet. In the 26th minute, we had a chance to take a six-goal lead. Petrus Mici missed it, but we still went into the break with five. And the Vipers managed only 10 goals. Oh my God, what did Loki play in the first half!!!
The second half started with a “strange” referee’s decision. Another player from Loki, who was already at a man disadvantage, was sent off by the Spors… This did not make the Debrecen players cry either. Gabrijela Bartulovic presented her feat for the umpteenth time, Nina Szabó shone in front of her and the others also did an amazing job in the match. We were already in the middle of the inning and still leading by three!!! Yes, but there was still a lot left, the Vipers were withdrawn, and the hall turned into a cauldron. In the 40th minute, the home team equalized and gained momentum, while ours seemed to be tired. The Norwegian star team took the lead for the first time in the 47th minute!!! But Loki held on, equalized and then took the lead. A chaotic last 5 minutes followed. We were already in the 57th and the score was still tied. And that’s when the best came. DVSC SCHAEFFLER took the lead and could attack in the last minute to advance. However, the last shot fell short and the Vipers scored once more with 10 seconds to go. It ended in a draw, the Norwegian team, the three-time BL winner and defending champion, advanced by one goal in total from the duel against the Hungarian bronze medalist. No justice…

Tomás Hlavaty: We came back from a very deep place, against a very good team. I know it’s bad to lose in such a close match, but Debrecen deserves all the praise. Lois Abbing’s golden hand decided the match.
Zoltán Szilágyi: It’s not easy what to say at this time. Our goal was to play a close and good game against the Vipers. I’m proud of the girls because it worked! Unfortunately, by the end of the second half, we were tired, we couldn’t sell our chances, we couldn’t stop the Vipers’ key players. The Champions League was a wonderful journey for us, I hope we can return next season.
