DVSC SCHAEFFLER starts its Champions League campaign against IK Sävehof. The girls are really looking forward to the start of the elite league, and hopefully they will play in front of a full house.
A few years ago, the participation of the Debrecen handball team in the Champions League would have seemed utopian, but now we are preparing for the start of the continent’s elite series. It’s been a long road to this point, but the bottom line is that DVSC SCHAEFFLER will start their Champions League adventure against the Swedish record champion Sävehof on Saturday.
In the first round of Group A, the team from Debrecen will play at home, and the opponent will be the 16-time Swedish champion IK Sävehof. The northerners have appeared in the BL 11 times so far, they last played in the group stage in the 2021/22 season, and finished seventh in their group of eight. In the current framework of the Sävehof, the 129-time goalkeeper of the Swedish national team, the bronze medalist at the 2014 European Championship in Hungary, Johanna Bundsen, and the 227-time Spanish national team, Olympic and World Cup bronze medalist, two-time European champion second Spanish right winger, Carmen, perform the routine Martin is represented by the Swedish champion. The 35-year-old Spanish classic also had plenty of success in the BL, in 2016 he was a member of the CSM Bucharest team that won the Final Four. Among the younger players, Olivia Mellegard, Johanna Forsberg, Nina Koppang and Frida Rosell, the ones to watch out for, are all Swedish and international.
After the two championships, which we both won by 31-23 (we won at Alba-Fehérvár’s home and then at home against Vasas), the BL start came into focus. The good news is that the minor injury of Petrus Mirtill, who missed the championship opener, has been fixed, so everyone is ready to fight except for Dóra Hornyák and Kata Juhász, who are rehabilitating after knee surgery.
“We are excitedly preparing for the first match of the Champions League, and it is a special pleasure for us that we can start the series at home – said Petra Vámos. – I hope as many people as possible will come on Saturday and support us! The Swedish team is physically very strong, and the individual skills of the players are outstanding. They play handball in a style typical of northern teams, so they prefer a fast game, so you have to prepare for it. The key to success can be our good defense, if we are stable at the back, then our rush will also work. In the offensive game, it is important to minimize technical errors and to make good use of situations!”
The DVSC SCHAEFFLER-IK Sävehof Champions League group match starting on Saturday, September 9 at 18:00 will be led by two young Slovenians, Ozren Backovic and Mirko Palackovic. The EHF referee of the match will be former world champion handball player Tatjana Medved of Serbia. The meeting will be broadcast live by Sport1 TV. The reporter will be Fülöp Marcell, the commentator Vilmos Köstner.
