Big journey: in Europe and in Hungary too – Part three

The DVSC SCHAEFFLER team concluded a stressful, full of experiences and wonderful season. The girls from Debrecen fought on three fronts, played 46 stakes matches and wrote history in the most prestigious European cup series. Season evaluation, part 3.

A snapshot of the round of 16 against Vipers

After finishing the group stage of the Champions League, the girls continued with a championship match, and the home match against NEKA was a painful one. Even if it was difficult, we got the two points, and then another team break followed. After the double European Cup matches against Switzerland, the final four of the Hungarian Cup awaited the people from Debrecen. In the Tatabánya hall, Győr was the opponent in the semi-finals, and that’s when it finally became clear that Conszüéla Hámori’s injury made the team defiant and determined. Despite leading with six goals in the middle of the second half, the later BL winner, DVSC SCHAEFFLER did not give up and turned the score around. The Győrs were able to win in the last minutes, but the 29-28 result proved once again that the team can compete with the best. After the bronze match of the Hungarian Cup, the company was full of smiles, as we produced a great second half and beat Mosonmagyaróvár 34-29, which was certainly encouraging for the upcoming championship performance of the two teams.

After the final four of the MK, the focus came back to Europe, as Zoltán Szilágyi’s team faced off against the Norwegian star team, Vipers Kristiansand, the three-time title defender. We were not the favorites for the duel, mainly because in the days before the first match, Petra Vámos’s ankle turned during one of the training sessions, so the professional staff could not count on our national team manager either. Despite this, DVSC SCHAEFFLER came close to a miracle, as they led 26-22 in the 49th minute. In the beginning, the Vipers turned the tables with the effective contribution of the two Romanian female referees, and finally won the first match of the match 29-28 in the packed Hódos. Before the rematch, another champion from Dunaújváros was waiting for the team, which traveled to Norway by special plane on Friday.

Petra Vámos was already available in Kristiansand, and her return meant a lot to the team. The girls produced the best half of the season, leading 15-10 in the home of the defending champion after thirty minutes of play. The team paraded both in attack and defense, and the hosts were apparently surprised to see what happened. Although we were down two men at the beginning of the second half, we still managed to keep the advantage in this period (38th minute: 15-20), then the Vipers machine started. The three-time BL winner went close, equalized, and then reversed. A few months earlier, in such a situation at the home of an opponent of such ability, Loki would probably have collapsed, but now it was clearly visible how much the team had improved during the BL battles. We took back the lead, the last minute started with a “game zero”. In the end, Lois Abbingh’s bomb gave the Vipers the equalizer and, overall, progress. If someone said at the start of the season that we would be sad after a draw at home to the defending champions…

After the BL farewell, the team concentrated on the championship campaign, the last nine games. The away champion against Békéscsaba was easily won by Zoltán Szilágyi’s students, and then there was a break of about a month, due to the national team’s Olympic qualifier. A week after the successful five-ring qualification tournament, the key match of the championship followed, Mosonmagyaróvár visited Hódos. After the seven-goal away defeat in October, of course, only victory was an acceptable result, and the dream would have been an eight-goal success. There was a chance for that, but even though we were leading by seven in the last minute and scored a goal, a referee’s error deprived the team of the opportunity to score eight goals, so MKC kept its step advantage.

Against MTK, Kisvárda, Vác, Kozármisleny and Budaörs, DVSC SCHAEFFLER did what they had to do, but the best was left to the end. Two feats, i.e. three points against Győr and Fradi, would have been needed to win the bronze medal. First, ETO visited Hódos, and although there were chances again, the later BL winner won 31-30. Loki did well in the home of the champion Ferencváros, but in the end the green and whites won 33-29.

DVSC SCHAEFFLER thus missed the podium, but the team produced a season that gave every fan an experience of a lifetime!
