Big journey: in Europe and in Hungary too – Part one

The DVSC SCHAEFFLER team concluded a stressful, full of experiences and wonderful season. Our team fought on three fronts, played 46 matches and wrote history in the most prestigious European cup series. Season review, part 1.

After the miracle in Bucharest

Although the 2023/24 season officially started on the first day of September for the team, the work behind the scenes started much earlier. Our club applied for the wild card of the Champions League, and according to the decision of the EHF on June 20, it was granted. We didn’t have much time to enjoy being in the elite league, since the draw was made a week later. We made it to the top eight, as in Group A, Romanian CSM Bucharest, Győr Audi ETO KC, Swedish Savehof, French Brest, Danish Odense, Montenegrin Buducnost Podgorica and German Bietigheim became opponents of DVSC SCHAEFFLER.

In September, the big march started, to begin with, we won both the away championship against Alba-Fehérvár and the domestic championship against Vasas by 31-23. Then, on September 9, a BL match was waiting for the Debrecen girls, the Swedish champion Savehof visited Hódos. The team felt the tension caused by the debut, but overall we managed the match with confidence. Going into the game, we led by eight goals, and in the end we “only” won 32-29, but the main thing is that we got the two points.

“The winning start was the most important thing, as we definitely wanted to win matches at home, and it was vital to get the two points against the Swedes. We started the way a match like this should be, we started at the right temperature right away. We had our ups and downs, but overall we played great handball for most of the match. Our runs worked well, we scored a lot of goals that way. We had leaders who accepted the responsibility and took advantage of the opportunities”, said head coach Zoltán Szilágyi after the first CL group match.

In the championship, we continued with confident successes against NEKA and Dunaújváros in the Champions League, but after the successful start, the two weakest productions followed: at the home of Győr, and then at home against the German champion Bietigheim, we ran into a heavy defeat. We ended the month in Odense, and even though we remained scoreless in the home of the Danes, this match showed that the team has “arrived” in the CL. After the terrible start (6-0 for the northerners after six minutes), we got back on our feet and were able to attack for the equalizer close to the goal. Unfortunately, the Norwegian referees wanted to avoid a surprise, so we ended up losing 33-30, but this match already predicted that DVSC SCHAEFFLER did not come to the Champions League to keep statistics!

The match in Odense was followed by a longer national team break, after which one of the key matches of the championship awaited the team on October 18, at the home of Mosonmagyaróvár. Unfortunately, even after a long consultation, it was not possible to find another date for the rally, so the team was only able to train together in Győr, at the Audi Arena, after two weeks, so they entered the field at the home of MKC, which is in great shape. Of course, all of this is no explanation for the disintegrating game, the many individual mistakes, and the fact that the hosts led by 11 goals at the start of the game. The difference was cosmeticized in the final game, but Mosonmagyaróvár still won 30-23, having previously defeated Győr as well, thus gaining a serious advantage in the fight for the bronze medal against Loki.

Euphory against Brest

After the shock on Wednesday, Zoltán Szilágyi had less than 70 hours left to get his team together, as the key match for the girls in the CL is on Saturday against Buducnost Podgorica. It was successful, as DVSC took control of the match after the first ten minutes, and under the leadership of Alexandra Töpfner, who did not miss any seven-meters and scored ten goals, and the irresistible Konszuéla Hámori, beat the former two-time CL winner Montenegrin champion 27-22.

After the “obligatory” domestic championship against MTK, the next CL task followed, a week after defeating Budu, the French Brest Bretagne, who are applying for the final four, visited Hódos. We prepared for the match with ominous signs, without the sick Planéta Szimonetta and Míra Vámos. It was already a surprise that Brest could not break away in the first half, as Maslova shot almost flawlessly. We were leading 15-14 at the break, and we hoped that the team could hold on. It could, no matter what! In the continuation, Gabrijela Bartulovic got to Maszlova’s bombs, the defense was excellent, and the offensive game… Well, after 19-18, we left the French standing with a four-nil rush, for whom there was no way back from here. The end result was 31-24, and this victory already raised their heads in Europe. And in the next round, DVSC SCHAEFFLER also proved that the victory against the Bretons was not a fluke. The red-white team scored a point at the home of the Romanian champion CSM Bucharest (29-29). Before the break due to the World Cup, we still won against Budaörs and Vác in the championship, and there was also a rematch against CSM, in which we remained without a point.

Despite this, the performance in the first eight rounds of the CL exceeded all expectations, after which we could expect to continue in the advanced position with seven points earned. DVSC SCHAEFFLER was already dubbed the “surprise team of the season” on the EHF website, but we never imagined what happened next…
