Swedish national team center back arrives

The 26-year-old Swedish national team center back, Daniela De Jong, will be a player for DVSC SCHAEFFLER from the summer. She comes from SCM Ramnicu Valcea and has signed a two-year contract.

Daniela De Jong’s name will certainly sound familiar to DVSC SCHAEFFLER fans. Even if we don’t necessarily have pleasant memories of her. In November, she played in both matches of the Europa League qualifiers against Valcea and was among the best on both occasions, in addition to scoring a total of ten goals. She began her career at the Swedish first division club Skuru IK, where she played for seven years. She won the league title in 2021 and the cup in 2022 with the team. From there, she moved to the Romanian team SCM Ramnicu Valcea in 2022. The 177 cm tall defender is a stable member of the Swedish national team, with which she finished fifth in 2021 and fourth in 2023 at the World Cup.

– The most important question: how are you? You haven’t played for Valcea for a while due to an injury.
– Yes, I have a problem with my back, but I’m getting better, thank you. I’m diligently going to treatments and I feel that they are effective. I hope that I can return to the field soon. I’m working hard to make that happen as soon as possible.
– Our fans don’t really need an introduction to you, because they saw you play in two games for Valcea in November. During the Europa League match, you scored 10 goals against us. That wasn’t nice of you…
– Oh, yes, sorry (laughs), but that’s my job as a professional player. By the way, we played two very tough games against Debrecen, which was a real challenge for me and my team. By the way, I love such intense games, it always gets me excited when there’s a lot at stake and luckily the game goes well in such games.
– And what a fate, from the summer you will be a player of the opponent in the Europa League in November. How did this transfer come about?

– The thing is, I already had a very good opinion of the Debrecen team before they contacted me. I watched several of their matches online and heard very good things from Kristin and Jessica (Thorleifsdóttir and Ryde – ed.). They said how good the girls are, the professional work is also fine, the conditions are very professional and that they like the city. So they were very convincing, and I was also impressed that during the negotiations they made me feel that they wanted me, so it wasn’t a difficult decision. I can’t wait to join the girls because I think they are a modern, fast-playing team full of big-name national team players. It’s a big challenge and an honor to be a part of this team.
– When you talk about your future team, it turns out that you analyzed it thoroughly from a professional perspective before you made your decision. Do you feel that the style of DVSC SCHAEFFLER would suit you?
– Absolutely. The fast handball that Debrecen plays clearly fits my playing style. The team builds on rushes, which – I might say this – I am also good at. At the same time, there are also sophisticated, technical solutions in attack, which are not far from my experience as a player.
I think I can be an even better player in this team, I can improve, so I’m really looking forward to it.
– We talked about the two Swedish players, Kristin Thorleifsdóttir and Jessica Ryde will be your teammates in Debrecen. Well, they have settled in great and have become absolute powerhouses, in addition to being able to go crazy on the field for the win. Is this mentality typical of you too, are you also that “crazy”?
– Yes, I am that crazy too, if you meant it in a positive way. By the way, I really like Kristin and Jessica, precisely because they are always cheerful and radiate positive energy. They are like that in everyday life and on the field, which I think is really necessary for a team to be successful. I hope that I can contribute to this with my own positive energy and charisma.
– The Swedish Skuru Ik was your first professional team. Did you grow up there too? How did your career start?
– I was born in Stockholm and I was about 15 years old when I signed with Skuru, where I spent seven years, but I wouldn’t say it was my first professional team, because at that time I was still constantly studying and working alongside the sport. There was a time when I woke up at six in the morning because I went to work before training, because in Sweden you can’t really make a living from handball.
So my first professional team is actually Valcea. I feel really good in Romania too. I made a good decision when I signed here three years ago. It was completely new for me to have to deal with handball 24 hours a day and just focus on becoming an even better player. So I enjoy being a professional, I always wanted to do that.
– Let’s talk about your national team career! You participated in two world championships before, but you missed the Paris Olympics, even though Sweden finished fourth. Do you feel a sense of loss because of that?
– Yes, of course. I had an unlucky year last year, because first I broke my hand and then my back was injured, so I couldn’t help the national team much. But that only makes me even more determined, because I have serious goals with the national team too. I’m trying to become an even better player and fight even harder to be a member of the squad again.
– And what are your personal goals for your time in Debrecen?
– My primary goal is to be able to play in the Champions League with the team. I remember what feats Debrecen achieved last year, I want to experience that too. But I always want to win every game.
I want us to be able to consistently deliver outstanding performances because I think the players are capable of it. My desire is to play real, high-stakes games in front of full houses, where there is a lot of pressure, because these are the games that really give me energy. I love challenges like that.
