At the beginning of the match, the parties were disturbed by a power outage, then in the continuation, even though we led by eight goals, the quarter-final ended in overtime. However, the point is that Hungary is in the semi-finals.
For a long time, it seemed that the most exciting period of the Hungary-Iceland U20 World Cup semi-final would be when the electricity went out in the Jane Szandanskij Sports Hall in the third minute with the score 1-1. It took a good half hour before the lights came on and the match could continue, with an overwhelming Hungarian advantage. The likeable, enthusiastic and of course skilled Icelanders were able to reach this point because they were placed in the branch chosen by the host, from where they marched to the quarter-finals. After the power outage, the difference between the two teams quickly became apparent, after more than a quarter of an hour we were leading 10-5, having overcome a few missed shots. In the continuation, it did not appear that the confident defeat of Iceland could cause any problems, and when we led 20-12 at the beginning of the second half after the confident lead at halftime, the quarterfinals seemed to be decided.
Then, after a bad period, Iceland closed to 22-19. Then Liliána Csernyanszki flashed and with her fourth hit we started up again. More precisely, we would have started. Because the aggressive, open defense of the northerners caught ours. In addition, the performance of the refereeing duo also left much to be desired. In any case, the Hungarian national team was thoroughly confused by the situation, so the sixty minutes ended in a draw.
Zoltán Szilágyi’s team found its way back to the right track twice in five minutes of overtime and won this period 5-2, so it is among the top four teams of the world championship.
In our division, the Netherlands beat Sweden 25-21 in the other quarter-final, so in the semi-final we will meet the Dutch national team on Friday, which our team beat 36-21 in Hódos, the main test of the world championship, two weeks before the duel to reach the final. But – especially after seventy minutes against Iceland – you shouldn’t rely on that!
