Big journey: in Europe and in Hungary too – Part two

The DVSC SCHAEFFLER team concluded a stressful, full of experiences and wonderful season. The girls from Debrecen fought on three fronts, played 46 stakes matches and wrote history in the most prestigious European cup series. Season review, part 2.

Due to the World Championship, there was a break of more than six weeks in the league and the CL. Three members of the DVSC SCHAEFFLER team (Petra Füzi-Tóvizi, Alexandra Töpfner and Vámos Petra) were in the Hungarian national team, while Tamara Haggerty was part of the Dutch national team and Jovana Jovovics was part of the Serbian national team at the tournament organized jointly by Denmark, Norway and Sweden. The players who appeared in the World Championship did not return to our club until around Christmas, and Liliána Csernyanszki was injured, so the team “passed” through this period with a rather weak squad.

Zoltán Szilágyi’s team decided to continue with a few joint training sessions behind them. On the penultimate day of the year 2023, the girls had an appearance in Kisvárda and easily won, and then, as the opening of the new year, on January 3, they defeated Kozármisleny in Hódos. This was the first stop of the eight-game January march. Three days after the NB I match against Kozármisleny, DVSC SCHAEFFLER tried to make a miracle in the Brest Arena, but unfortunately could only keep up with the French star team until the end of the first half due to the defeat in Debrecen. The following week was not boring either, on Wednesday at the home of Vác, Loki fought to reach the quarter-finals of the Hungarian Cup, and on Sunday the girls from Debrecen had a key match in the Champions League…

We entered the field at the home of Buducnost so that the home team knew exactly that this was their last chance to stay in the competition for promotion. But despite the encouragement of the “perpetual Montenegrin champion”, despite Budu’s great start (10th minute, 3-0), they managed to turn it around with a four-nil rush. The sides went head-to-head until the break, and in the second half the former two-time BL winner didn’t even have a chance: we won 27-21, and with this success, even if not mathematically, we secured our passage from the group. The team traveled straight from the Montenegrin capital to Győr, and on Wednesday they played in the championship against ETO. And in the Audi Arena, we were very close to the greatest feat of the past decades, as we led 21-18 in the last ten minutes, and although we ended up without a point, it turned out that DVSC SCHAEFFLER can rise to the immediate elite level. True, three days later, the fast of the tiring series was over, we played for the third time in six days, this time Odense was the opponent in Hódos. And the Danish star formation mercilessly took advantage of mistakes caused by fatigue and won 35-22. However, the day ended with good news, as the team from Győr won in Podgorica, and with that the team officially advanced from the Champions League group! There were still two games left of the forced march at the beginning of the year. On January 27, in the championship against Fradi, we failed to achieve the feat, and on the last day of the month, in Dunaújváros, we reached the final four of the Hungarian Cup with a mirror-like success.

Celebration in Bietigheim (Photo: EHF)

In February, the team had “only” six matches, and we didn’t even dare to dream of finishing the second month of 2024 with a hundred percent performance. The series started with an away BL match against Bietigheim, and since the German champion won by ten goals in Hódos in September, we couldn’t expect much good in Ludwigsburg either. The half-time result seemed gratifying, as the later finalist of the series was ahead by only two goals. But perhaps the best thirty minutes of the season followed, which DVSC SCHAEFFLER won with six goals. Many times we rubbed our eyes, because what we saw on the field was unreal. We won the second half 18-12 and the game 31-27, and thus the statement of the European association that “DVSC SCHAEFFLER is the surprise team of the 2023/24 BL season” was finally confirmed. After the victory in Germany, we won the championship against Alba-Fehérvár with momentum, and then the BL match against Győr followed, in which a very long streak was broken. After more than a decade and a half, 5589 days later, we won again against Győr. After the wonderful success, we couldn’t be completely happy because of only one thing: Conszüéla Hámori suffered a serious injury, her cruciate ligament was torn. Nina Szabó, who was loaned to MTK, returned from the capital after Koni’s elimination, and she also presented herself in the away championship against Vasas in her old-new team, in a winning match. And on Sunday, our returning player also made his mark in the BL, scoring four goals at the home of the Swedish champion Sävehof, and he became the best player in the match won by 36-27. With this victory, it was decided that DVSC SCHAEFFLER finished in fifth place in BL Group A, and in the round of 16, the gold medalists of the last three series, the Norwegian Vipers Kristiansand, will be their opponent.
