We were leading at halftime against the Swedes in Gothenburg, but ended up losing. With this, we slipped out of the World Cup quarter-finals, but the Olympic dream is still alive. The six-goal Petra Vámos was the most successful player of the Hungarian national team.
“You cannot step into the same river twice,” said the wisdom of the ancient teacher Heraclitus. I mean, the Hungarian women’s handball team succeeded… Just like on Monday, in the match against Montenegro, this time too, after a well-successful first half, the national team dug in very deep. It started well again though. Petra Vámos scored the first goal of the match, and after the tight first ten minutes we gradually withdrew. Our defense worked, and although there were mistakes in our offensive game, we gained an advantage, and in the 26th minute, with Petra Vámos’ goal, we already led by three (8-11).
Although the difference narrowed by the break, the overall picture definitely looked positive. Just like in Monday’s game against Montenegro. And unfortunately, the continuation was the same as on Monday. Blanka Böde-Bíró, who piled up feats after feats in the first half, could no longer help, the clean shots from the wing were missed, so with a 10-2 series, the Swedes were ahead by five goals. In the continuation, we tried with honor, but they won, and the hosts easily. This is how we missed the quarter-finals, but we can still hope for a place in the Olympic qualifiers.
