A very important match awaits the team, on Saturday from 16:00 we will host Buducnost. Whichever team wins can take a big step towards next round. Let’s see what you need to know about the next opponent!
So far, we have met the Montenegrin record champion only once; in 2010, in the European Cup Winners’ Cup. Then in Podgorica, the Montenegrins won by eight goals (28-20), but they almost managed to overcome the deficit in the rematch with a parade atmosphere. DVSC won 27-20, but this meant the elimination of DVSC. It is a fact that Buducnost won the KEK that season with such excellences as Katarina Bulatovics, Jovanka Radicsevics, or Milena Raicsevics (maiden name: Knezsevics), who still plays handball in Podgorica.
Our opponent could rightfully hold the title of “perpetual Montenegrin champion”, as he has won the championship of his country easily for a long time. The meaning of the word Buducsnoszt is: future, and looking at the past, we can conclude that the club from Podgorica is almost the same age as DVSC. The former was founded in 1949, the latter a year earlier, in 1948. In 1962, the Blues were able to celebrate the Montenegrin championship, and in 1985, they finished first in the highly prestigious and high-quality Yugoslav championship, for the first time in their history!
And if a business starts: in 1985 they also won their first European trophy, the European Cup Winners’ Cup, and in 1987 they also conquered the IHF Cup (former Europa League). The international successes were not left behind in the sequel either. In 2006 and 2010, they became CEC winners again, and in 2012 and 2015 they ascended the throne of Europe, conquering the Champions League cup. The team’s legendary home is Moracsa, which opened its doors in 1978. In addition to the handball players, the basketball team also plays in the 6,000-seat hall, which underwent a major renovation in 2018.
The head coach of Buducnost Podgorica is former world-class striker Bojana Popovics, who also manages the Montenegrin national team. In both places, the other former excellence, Maja Savic, is her assistant. The coach’s extended hand on the field is the 33-year-old Olympic silver medalist and European champion manager Milena Raicsevics, who is by far the most successful Podgorica player in this year’s BL season with 19 goals.
The goalkeeper of the Montenegrins, Ann-Cathrin Giegerich, who joined the Blues from Debrecen, may be quite familiar to us, but the former Ferencváros, then Győr, Hungarian national team member Noémi Háfra or Armelle Attingré, who once defended Székesfehérvár, do not need to be introduced.
Apart from them, Podgorica also has Brazilian, French, Turkish and Bulgarian legions. Looking at the results of the season so far, it is easy to compare the Montenegrin team with our own team, since they played exactly the same opponents and the same line of play as us in the BL. Both teams scored two points each, but the fact that our goal difference (-22) is much better than our opponent’s (-37) is a cause for confidence.
